Medium Voltage Generation

Medium-voltage generation (12 kV) has been extensively deployed by ACCIONA Windpower. Its main advantages: the possible elimination of transformers and a reduction in power losses, in cases where the wind turbines are close to the substation.

The AW wind turbines are designed to generate at 12,000 volts, compare to 690 volts which is more common for other manufacturers.

For wind farms that are in close proximity to a substation for connecting the project to the grid (<5km) this technology could save a project developer significant costs with the correct design optimization:

  • Cost savings of up to 50% in power collection infrastructure.
  • An average increase in production of 1% due to the losses avoided through the use of a transformer.
  • Avoidance of maintenance and potential transformer failures.
